ABOUT DR. BOYLE

Dr. Karen Elizabeth Boyle is a nationally recognized expert in microsurgical vasectomy reversals and a leading physician in the field of male fertility, reproductive medicine and sexual health.   She has performed more than 500 successful vasectomy reversals.  Patients travel from the U.S. and other countries to have their reversal performed by Dr. Boyle.  She is skilled in both microsurgical vasovasostomy, as well as microsurgical epididymovasostomy, and as a specialist in male infertility, she has helped more than a thousand couples have babies through a wide variety of male infertility treatments.

Dr. Boyle received an A.B. in Biology from Harvard University where she graduated cum laude, and received her medical degree from Albany Medical College with distinction in research.  She completed her general surgery and urological surgery training at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and The Brady Urological Institute, after which she completed the prestigious microsurgery fellowship in Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine.  She returned to The Johns Hopkins Hospital where she served as assistant professor of urology, obstetrics and gynecology, as well as director of reproductive medicine and surgery.  While at Hopkins, she developed an excellent reputation that grew into a large practice solely dedicated to vasectomy reversal, male infertility and microsurgery.   Dr. Boyle is committed to teaching and academics, and is a clinical instructor of urology at George Washington University Hospital, as well as a regional director of male fertility at Shady Grove Fertility Reproductive Science Center.

Dr. Boyle was a featured physician on the ABC television documentary Hopkins, and her substantial contributions to her unique field of expertise, combined with her ease in effective communication, result in numerous media interviews and appearances.  She is a medical expert for the ABC television program Good Morning America Health, and has appeared on The View and Good Morning America Weekend.  She is a contributor on vasectomy reversal, fertility and sexual health to many magazines including Men’s Health,CosmopolitanGlamourWomen’s DayWomen’s HealthFertility TodayRadius and Playboy. She was named as one of the Top 100 Professional Women under 40 by The Daily Record in 2010, and she was named a "Top Doctor" by Baltimore magazine in 2011.

As an experienced microsurgeon who has been an infertility and reversal expert for over 10 years,  Dr. Boyle is part of an elite group of two percent of board-certified urologists in the U.S. who are fellowship trained in male infertility and microsurgical techniques.

Dr. Boyle performs reversals every week, and is often consulted to correct failed vasectomy reversals performed by physicians without specialized fellowship training.  One of her more recent patients had his vasectomy performed 42 years prior to reversal.  Two-layer microsurgical vasovasostomies were successfully performed, resulting in a normal sperm count, pregnancy and baby soon to follow.

She is a kind, compassionate physician and microsurgeon with an excellent bedside manner and approach to the delicate, sensitive procedure of vasectomy reversal.  Dr. Boyle is always available to her patients, and is reachable by cell phone and home phone for consultations, questions and concerns.  When patients are visiting from out of town, Dr. Boyle will make “house calls” and prides herself in being an excellent communicator, a good listener, and always present for her patients needs or concerns.

As a leader in her field, she recognizes how important it is to address all issues related to the well-being and happiness of her patients.  “I am committed to surpassing patient expectations and providing exceptional patient care,” she explains.  “It is essential to choose a microsurgeon who you not only feel will perform a successful surgery, but one who will be the kind of doctor who will care for you every step of this journey.”

“When choosing a surgeon to perform your vasectomy reversal, it is essential to choose wisely,” she says.  “Patients should choose a fellowship-trained microsurgeon who performs vasectomy reversal procedures weekly and is considered an expert and dedicated specialist.  The microsurgeon should be able to report their personal outcomes and vasectomy reversal success rates.  Many urologists will offer to perform a reversal, but are not adequately trained to do so.  ”  She advises patients to call and speak to their prospective surgeons about their training and expertise prior to making a consultation appointment.  “A fellowship is a one to two-year training period following residency, which allows a surgeon to specialize in a particular procedure or technique, providing a true area of expertise.  There are only a handful of fellowships in microsurgery and male infertility nationally.  Only a select number of urologists have completed this training and are capable of performing a successful vasovasostomy for vasal occlusion from vasectomy  and epidiymovasostomy for more complex  blockages in the epididymis which can often occur when over ten years out from a vasectomy.  Ask your prospective surgeon how many reversals they have performed, their personal success rates, and how regularly they perform them.”

All reversals are performed in a state-of-the-art, ambulatory surgical center certified by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC).  Dr. Boyle utilizes the most advanced of microsurgical equipment including a cutting-edge Zeiss microscope through which the reversal is performed.  Dr. Boyle’s team includes speciality-trained nurses and board-certified anesthesiologists.

“At the time of surgery, the decision is made to either perform a two-layer water tight microsurgical vasovasostomy or an end-to-side epididymovasostomy.  This decision is based upon the vasal fluid quality, and following surgery I can tell patients their success rates based upon my extensive experience.”  Please visit Dr. Boyle’s website www.drkarenboyle.com for her personal outcomes and microsurgical vasectomy reversal success rates.

Her awards in science and medicine include being awarded first place in the International Science and Engineering Fair as well as being named a Westinghouse Science Talent Scholar.  She has been honored by the United States Army and Navy for her contributions to research and was the U.S. Representative to Japan for their national science convention. "I was very impressed with the amount of time Dr. Boyle spent with me. I felt like I was the only patient to be seen that day. It’s unusual not to feel rushed by a physician because they need to move on to the next patient."
